Kara is a great groomer. My dog can be very aggressive but over time she has calmed him down and grooming has become routine for him. And, he looks great too!

Kara is wonderful! She has worked with our very anxious 100lb Bernedoodle and completely transformed his behavior and grooming experience from terrified and avoidant, to calm and tolerant. When we arrived for our appointment yesterday, he ran through the door, excited to see Kara. We frequently receive compliments on Norman's cut and blowout- Kara is the best in Monroe County!

We moved to Rochester 2 years ago, and Kara at The Purrfect Paws is just amazing. Our Portuguese Water Dog, Moose, and our Australian Labradoodle have had such great, and consistently so, grooming experiences. Kara is very attentive to how they are feeling and always asks for thoughts/feedback prior to and after each grooming session. We feel very fortunate to have found Kara.

I adopted a 15 year old long haired cat 14 months ago. It was past the 1 year mark before she even started to become cuddly. Since then I've been working to desensitize her to a comb or brush, and a harness for travel. She is friendly with my neighbor, Mom and Dad, but still runs under the bed upon their arrival and usually stays there. In these couple of months of getting to pet her more I noticed some matted furr. She did great to let me clip a few medium sized mats with scissors, only one at a time/ per day. Then I found she had several tinier mats scattered over her back quarters. I attempted to comb them out but it seemed they were more painful because she wouldn't let me near them. I wish I remembered exactly how I came to find Kara exactly. I am so lucky that I did. I really hoped having a groomer come to the house would mitigate the stress my cat would be under. I was sure my cat would need at least 2 people to restrain her, if not a muzzle or some medication. I was also sure that something needed to be attempted for my cats own good as those mats were close to her skin and obviously tender. I am still shocked that not only did my cat not need restraining, but Kara was so extremely competent, confident, kind, gentle, and empathetic, that my cat sat in her lap while Kara worked her magic. Was there some protesting on my cats part? Well of course she was sure to express herself. Honestly though, the moment I handed my cat to Kara I knew she was in good hands. It was not an easy moment for me knowing good and well how much she does not enjoy interacting with people. ( Cat, not Kara, lol) I'm still in disbelief at how quickly and gently she trimmed my cats claws. She doesn't even like when I think about touching her paws. On top of all that, Kara was kind enough to share some expert advice on cat behavior, needs, and grooming. I'm so glad to hear she is preparing to share her knowledge with other groomers as it will serve to improve the lives of so many cats and their parents. I cannot recommend Kara enough! If she could tame my wild beast enough to trim her nails and shave her back quarters, she can definitely help you. Worth every penny to have this done well, safely, and properly in the comfort of home. Thank you Kara!

Frequently Asked Questions About Cat Grooming

What should I expect during a professional cat grooming session?

A typical professional cat grooming session usually begins with a consultation to discuss your cat's needs. The groomer will then examine your cat's coat and skin condition before proceeding with services like brushing to remove loose fur, bathing with cat-specific shampoo, blow-drying, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and any specialized haircuts if needed. Most sessions take between 1-2 hours depending on your cat's coat condition and temperament.

How should I prepare my cat for a grooming appointment?

To prepare your cat for grooming, brush them at home a few days before to remove loose fur and minor tangles. Keep your cat in a secure carrier for transportation. Arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork and allow your cat time to adjust to the new environment. Bring information about your cat's health, temperament, and any areas they're sensitive about. For anxious cats, consider withholding food for 2-3 hours before the appointment to reduce the risk of stress-related nausea.

Why is professional cat grooming important?

Professional cat grooming is important for several reasons: it reduces shedding and hairballs, prevents painful matting, allows early detection of skin issues or parasites, keeps your cat's coat healthy and shiny, reduces dander (helpful for allergy sufferers), and maintains proper hygiene. Professional groomers have specialized tools, products, and techniques to safely handle cats, even those with behavioral challenges. Regular grooming also helps cats become more comfortable with handling, which is beneficial for veterinary visits.

How often should my cat be professionally groomed?

The frequency of professional grooming depends on your cat's coat type, length, and lifestyle. Long-haired breeds like Persians typically need grooming every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting. Medium-haired cats may need grooming every 6-8 weeks, while short-haired cats might only need professional attention every 8-12 weeks or during seasonal shedding periods. Cats with special conditions like obesity or arthritis that prevent self-grooming may need more frequent appointments. Your groomer can recommend an appropriate schedule based on your cat's specific needs.

What's the difference between cat and dog grooming?

Cat grooming differs significantly from dog grooming. Cats have more sensitive skin, requiring gentler handling and cat-specific products. Their grooming sessions are typically shorter to minimize stress. Cats often need specialized restraint techniques and quieter environments. Cat groomers use different tools designed for feline coats and are trained to recognize signs of stress unique to cats. Cat-only grooming facilities eliminate the anxiety many cats experience around dogs, creating a more comfortable experience for your feline friend.
