John’s attention to detail and care for the dogs he’s working with is unmatched. I like that I know who is handling my dog the entire time, being that John runs his business himself. We’ve been taking our dog to John for 8 years now and couldn’t be happier with his work and service.

I am amazed by John, the owner at CleanDog. I have a new puppy and he has gone above and beyond to help me, answer all my questions and share his knowledge and expertise. He truly exemplifies the word, kindness and obviously is a gifted teacher/mentor in the industry. It's rare to find someone who will take so much time and care while also showing patience. His passion for what he does is evident. Thanks for being you, John!

John is fantastic. His work is meticulous and his studio is pristine. AND he is a very friendly and accommodating guy. Have been coming to him for almost 10 years and could never be satisfied with any other Groomer anymore.

After some active trips with my old English sheepdog and then 4 week obedience training, my poor dog was heavily matted....completely my fault. John was booked prior to the holidays but he emailed me back asking if any groomer had taken on the challenge. Three groomers all said that he could only be shaved....in December. John worked on him for 5 hours and my dog is fully groomed, bathed and very happy. He looks and feels amazing. The guy is a genius to achieve that with no redness to my dogs skin, just some slight irritation. What's more he offered to maintain the lower quoted price. This is why he's booked out, I was lucky to have the quiet holiday week.

Can't say enough good things about John and Clean Dog. I brought my Shihtzu, Gus, to John for the first time yesterday. I'd heard good things from neighbors a few years ago so decided to call for an appointment. Clean Dog is amazingly calm, (particularly for a grooming business), and clean without being antiseptic. We sat together to discuss what I wanted in terms of style and length while my dog was able to get to know John and sniff his surroundings. I returned a few hours later to a beautifully groomed pup who smelled fantastic. Completely exceeded my expectations in every way. My 3 year old dog has never looked better. Very happy customer.

John is a perfectionist. Period. You will not find better or more meticulous grooming. This might be a little bit more expensive than your typical grooming experience, but you get what you pay for. You will be hard-pressed to find a better groomer in the city.

Being new to Chicago, we have struggled for the last 6 months finding anyone able to match the quality we’ve grown accustomed to with our long-time groomer back home. Bouncing from one shop to the next and varying levels of disappointment, we had started to think we would never find someone to do our St. Berdoodle puppy even adequately. From being left wet, sticky, and matted to discovering chopped up feet (odd as we only request a bath/blowout), we’ve encountered it all. Nevertheless, today our search thankfully came to an end. John is truly a level above in every way!! The expertise, joy, and pride he takes in his work shows from nose to tail, so to speak. His shop is impeccable, and our girl came home both happy and looking like the fluffy teddy-bear we adore. We will be clients for life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cat Grooming

What should I expect during a professional cat grooming session?

A typical professional cat grooming session usually begins with a consultation to discuss your cat's needs. The groomer will then examine your cat's coat and skin condition before proceeding with services like brushing to remove loose fur, bathing with cat-specific shampoo, blow-drying, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and any specialized haircuts if needed. Most sessions take between 1-2 hours depending on your cat's coat condition and temperament.

How should I prepare my cat for a grooming appointment?

To prepare your cat for grooming, brush them at home a few days before to remove loose fur and minor tangles. Keep your cat in a secure carrier for transportation. Arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork and allow your cat time to adjust to the new environment. Bring information about your cat's health, temperament, and any areas they're sensitive about. For anxious cats, consider withholding food for 2-3 hours before the appointment to reduce the risk of stress-related nausea.

Why is professional cat grooming important?

Professional cat grooming is important for several reasons: it reduces shedding and hairballs, prevents painful matting, allows early detection of skin issues or parasites, keeps your cat's coat healthy and shiny, reduces dander (helpful for allergy sufferers), and maintains proper hygiene. Professional groomers have specialized tools, products, and techniques to safely handle cats, even those with behavioral challenges. Regular grooming also helps cats become more comfortable with handling, which is beneficial for veterinary visits.

How often should my cat be professionally groomed?

The frequency of professional grooming depends on your cat's coat type, length, and lifestyle. Long-haired breeds like Persians typically need grooming every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting. Medium-haired cats may need grooming every 6-8 weeks, while short-haired cats might only need professional attention every 8-12 weeks or during seasonal shedding periods. Cats with special conditions like obesity or arthritis that prevent self-grooming may need more frequent appointments. Your groomer can recommend an appropriate schedule based on your cat's specific needs.

What's the difference between cat and dog grooming?

Cat grooming differs significantly from dog grooming. Cats have more sensitive skin, requiring gentler handling and cat-specific products. Their grooming sessions are typically shorter to minimize stress. Cats often need specialized restraint techniques and quieter environments. Cat groomers use different tools designed for feline coats and are trained to recognize signs of stress unique to cats. Cat-only grooming facilities eliminate the anxiety many cats experience around dogs, creating a more comfortable experience for your feline friend.
